ARTIST STATEMENT

The idea of what young girls should be has changed dramatically over time. The Girl Scout who earned badges for good deeds and being helpful has been replaced by the “Bling Barbie” whose values lie in the exterior world of diamonds and lipstick. My Little Pony, a product that was developed in direct response to the actual dreams little girls had of horses, has now becomeremarkably similar in pose and gaze to the overly sexualized women in film
and advertisements.
My work incorporates the manufactured glitter coated-girlhood vernacular, distorting and subverting it to question our perception of popular culture. Through elaborately-layered drawings, self-contained miniature dollhouses,
and large-scale installation I create the enticing and fantastical. Pony Girl is a fictional character that I have invented to occupy many of the installations I create. These elaborate "glitter" constructions contain purchased and highly crafted objects that inform the complicated rites of girlhood. As both a product and critic of this world, I address our shifting realities formed by a consumerist society bent on sexuality and vanity.
